A relatively small place in Chad called the Bodélé depression provides much of the “mineral dust” that fertilizes the entire Amazon basin. 

About 40 million tons of dust survives the trip through air currents over the Atlantic ocean to be deposited in the rainforest. Using satellite imagery, scientists have solved the paradox of the Amazon’s basin’s rich soil.
